The Crime Scene Unit plays a critical role in all criminal investigations that contain a forensic component. Without their specific skill set in identifying, preserving, processing, and collecting physical evidence many of the cases that occur within Charlotte would go unsolved. The Crime Scene Unit takes pride in supporting our sworn members of the department as well as serving the citizens of Charlotte that are impacted by crime.

Below are a few examples of our civilian departments:
CMPD Crime Lab Division
The Crime Lab is responsible for scientifically testing evidence collected from crime scenes, suspects, and victims to help move investigations forward and assist the criminal justice system with resolving unanswered questions in legal cases. Scientists perform testing of DNA, illegal drugs, blood alcohol, firearms, fingerprints, arson evidence and questioned documents from criminal cases throughout Charlotte and Mecklenburg County. Crime Lab scientists typically have a four-year science or advanced degree along with years of specialized training in one or more areas of forensic testing, a genuine interest in forensics and a desire to be part of a team of highly trained and motivated scientists supporting law enforcement and the criminal justice system.
Civilian Crash Investigation Unit
The Civilian Crash Investigation Unit (CCI) is a critical, specialized component of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. It’s primary mission is to significantly enhance operational efficiency and improve response times for routine motor vehicle incidents across Charlotte and Mecklenburg County. The unit focuses exclusively on crashes that result only in property damage and do not involve any personal injuries.
The core function of the CCI is to relieve sworn police officers from the time-consuming duty of documenting and investigating minor traffic collisions. By handing off these non-emergency tasks, the CCI allows sworn officers to dedicate their time and resources to higher-priority calls, active crime fighting and emergency situations that require law enforcement authority
CMPD Human Resources Division
The CMPD Human Resources Division is committed to providing effective, high quality human resource management to the employees of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. Working collaboratively as a business partner, we strive to build trust in every interaction while providing expertise and best practices in all areas including recruitment and retention, employee relations, training, disability services and records administration.
CMPD Financial Management Unit
The Financial Management unit is responsible for the management of resources and expenditures for all CMPD funding. The Division provides budget, procurement, compliance, and accounting services to all CMPD internal employees. The goal of the Financial Management unit is to ensure that the department is being a reliable steward of government funding for the City of Charlotte.
CMPD Communications Division
The CMPD Communications Division is the primary Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) for the City of Charlotte, the Town of Huntersville, the Town of Davidson, Charlotte Douglas International Airport Operations and surrounding unincorporated areas in Mecklenburg County. CMPD’s Communications Division is operated 24/7 by dedicated civilian staff responsible for answering 911 calls for assistance, dispatching appropriate emergency responders, and coordinating information through state and national criminal justice databases.
