CMPD: Where Women Shine

Think policing is a man’s world? Think again.

Leading. Protecting. Inspiring the community as role models. Women at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department have unlimited opportunities to shine.

As a career path, policing can present unique challenges for women. CMPD understands. We lead the nation in offering progressive benefits and programs that promote a healthy work-life balance, and set up our sworn officers and civilian staff for success.

“On a daily basis, I feel valued and supported by my colleagues and superiors. In a male-dominated profession, females add a nice balance to the equation.”

-Officer Jasmine Nivens, Recruitment Division

30 by 30 initiative

CMPD is proud to be a part of the 30×30 initiative, a national pledge for law enforcement agencies to increase the number of women in their ranks to 30% representation by the year 2030.

We’re already making great strides. Women make up 14% of CMPD’s workforce, above the national average. Our executive team is erasing stereotypes and changing the face of law enforcement. Among our 11 executive leaders, eight are women.

Our Priority:
Creating a Supportive Environment for All

CMPD and the City Charlotte have implemented a wide variety of initiatives designed to promote the well-being of our sworn officers and civilian staff, as well as their families:

Protected Parental Leave

Parents are entitled to FMLA leave for newborn care and prenatal needs, fostering stronger family bonds and support networks throughout an officer’s career. CMPD also provides six weeks of Paid Paternal Leave for new parents.

Access to Healthcare Services

Employees enjoy convenient access to healthcare through Marathon Health, which operates onsite health centers providing primary care, behavioral health services, health coaching, illness and injury care, labs, medication dispensing, wellness services, and wellness visits for biometric screening. This is especially beneficial for mothers seeking optimal healthcare solutions for their families at minimal to no cost.

Access to Mental Health Services

Accessible wellness services, peer support through our Office of Employee Wellness. We also provide am employee assistance programs which provides various wellness services. Qualified mental health professionals hired and contracted by the agency prioritize cultural competence around law enforcement, ensuring officers and their families receive credible and empathetic support.

Duty Considerations During Pregnancy

Officers are empowered to decide on suitable duty transitions based on medical advice and agency expectations, with support from our Human Resources Division. Options for modified duty assignments and a designated liaison for pregnancy-related employment inquiries are available to officers. CMPD respects women’s autonomy and does not compel them to undertake alternative assignments. Instead, women are given the choice to opt for alternative duties, provided it does not compromise their safety or the safety of others.

Lactation Spaces

In compliance with federal regulations, CMPD provides private lactation spaces for breastfeeding mothers, ensuring adherence to the Break Time for Nursing Mothers law. CMPD Currently has five lactation rooms and will be adding a sixth location at our Training Academy. Additionally, through our benefit program, we offer Dependent Care Flexible Savings Accounts to facilitate childcare expenses.

Family Integration in Academy Training

Recognizing the impact of law enforcement careers on family dynamics, CMPD integrates family day into its BLET Academy Program. This allows families to become familiar with the department, staff and most importantly be a part of the noble career of policing.

Education Reimbursement Program

Education reimbursement programs enable women in law enforcement to pursue advanced degrees, certifications, or specialized training that can enhance their skills and qualifications. This, in turn, opens pathways to higher-ranking positions within law enforcement agencies.

Secondary Language Program

The ability to speak a second language enables women officers to communicate effectively with a broader range of community members, including those who may not speak English fluently. This facilitates trust-building, crime reporting, and collaboration in investigations, ultimately enhancing public safety.

“Don’t ever second-guess your passion for law enforcement because of your gender. There are opportunities at CMPD to succeed regardless if you are male or female.”

-Kelly Alvarez, Communications Division Manager

“I think while men can be physically stronger, women have strong minds and good coping mechanisms for the challenges we face.”

-Alexa Thompson, Crime Scene Technician, Crime Scene Investigations
