In a hiring market where new and experienced officers, telecommunicators and law enforcement administration staff can grow their career anywhere, many look to Charlotte for better weather, educational options and lifestyle, in addition to the career opportunities available at CMPD.

1. Better weather and cost of living

Many who relocate to Charlotte (especially from the northeast) value the moderate climate and cost of living. For Bronx native and CMPD Officer Nestor Montero, both impacted his father’s decision to relocate his family to the Carolinas.

“For my father, it was definitely the cost of living, nicer weather and suburban lifestyle without all of the congestion of New York,” said Officer Montero, in his 11th year of service with CMPD. “My favorite things about living here are the scenery and outdoors.”

Charlotte is also a popular destination for lateral entry officers, looking to retire their snow shovels or move closer to family.

2. Education options to boost your earning potential

“Fresh out of high school, I was eager to be on my own so Charlotte was a no-brainer,” said Jatasha Bias, a CMPD officer since 2019.

A native of Washington state, Officer Bias moved to Charlotte in 2008 to attend Johnson C. Smith University, one of four colleges in the area. While a college degree isn’t required to apply to CMPD, it can boost earning potential. Those with associate degrees earn an additional 5% each year and bachelors degrees can earn an additional 10%.

3. Something for every interest and lifestyle

Charlotte offers nightlife for millennials, suburban options for younger families and outdoor experiences for those looking to destress.

“Depending on what you’re looking for you can find a city within the city,” said Officer Bias. “The hustle and bustle of uptown, the waterfronts for your peaceful quiet days and the foliage for those that love the outdoors – Charlotte has everything you’re looking for and then some.”

4. Career advancement and support

Beyond competitive salaries and benefits, CMPD provides officers with leadership opportunities and comprehensive training to increase their earning potential. With 13 different divisions and specialized positions, CMPD offers room for growth.

“CMPD has almost every resource you can imagine,” said Detective Anasterasia Gose. “The access to training is amazing, as well as the supervisors. They want to see you improve. They are very accommodating of any training or class you want to take.”
