A career with CMPD can take officers in many different directions. With more than 30 specialized units, officers can build experience on patrol, then pursue new challenges that match their skills and interests.
CMPD’s Special Weapons and Tactics Team, or SWAT, responds to high-risk situations where specialized training, equipment and tactics are needed to help keep people safe. The team includes tactical officers, crisis negotiators and medics who work together during complex, high-stress incidents.
Officer Jake Carroll serves on CMPD’s SWAT Team. We asked him what drew him to the unit, what it takes to succeed there and what officers should know if they hope to pursue a specialized assignment of their own.
Why did you choose to join SWAT?
I wanted to work alongside the best-trained professionals in our department. I knew that the SWAT team trained on a regular basis, and with regular training comes knowledge and a skillset that is required to be successful in the SWAT team’s mission. I knew that being part of this team would prepare me to be successful in whatever role I found myself in within this department.
What do you enjoy most about your work as part of this team?
I enjoy knowing that I have the best officers and sergeants by my side when working a high-risk, high-stress incident. The SWAT team demonstrates a thorough and precise approach in their selection process. Because of this, the team yields some of the department’s top performers, known for their strength and decision-making ability. It is because of this that I continue to dedicate my time and energy to this team.
What strengths or skills make someone a good candidate for the SWAT team?
A good candidate is someone who isn’t afraid to make a decision. It is someone who can bring calm to chaos. It is the person that can look at the overall picture, develop a logical, safe plan and then execute that plan.
What additional training, education or certifications are required?
An officer interested in participating in the selection process for SWAT must have a minimum of two years of sworn experience with the department. There is no additional education or certifications required to participate in the selection process.
What is the most rewarding part of working in SWAT?
The guys I work with. I work with some of the most skilled and purpose-driven guys in CMPD. I leave every training day or mission proud of what we, as a SWAT team, accomplished. We are successful because of the guys on the team.
What advice do you have for someone interested in a career in a specialized unit?
For the SWAT team specifically, I would say you need to ensure that your character is above reproach. The SWAT team expects each of its members to hold themselves to a higher standard — not just at work, but in their personal lives, too.
