Earlier this month, law enforcement agencies across the country paused to honor those who serve and remember those they’ve lost during National Police Week. Here in the Queen City, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department hosted special events throughout the week to celebrate and show appreciation for the men and women of our region who protect and serve.

Here are a few of this year’s highlights:

Pedaling With a Purpose
Saturday, May 9

As in past years, 2026 Police Week started with the Bike2DC sendoff. CMPD was privileged to host the local agencies’ start to this year’s ride. The 500-mile, four-day Bike2DC – Ride to Honor brings officers and community members together to honor the heroes who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Every mile is a tribute to those who gave their lives in service to their community. Their bravery and dedication continues to guide us every day.

Members of CMPD’s command staff took turns braving the dunk tank in support of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Benevolent Fund. Lieutenants, captains, majors and even deputy chiefs left their fate up to their colleagues’ throwing arms.

During the 2026 awards ceremony, we honored 147 individuals for their exceptional service and bravery during the past 12 months. From Lifesaving Awards to Medals of Valor and more, this annual event recognizes sworn and professional CMPD staff whose extraordinary work has made a profound impact in our community. It also highlights the standard of excellence held across our department.

“We celebrate the accomplishments of our awardees, all of whom have demonstrated courage, valor and leadership,” said CMPD Chief Estella Patterson. “They are carrying out the legacy of the heroes who gave the ultimate sacrifice, and they are doing so by being a leader and being out front.”

Police Week Field Day was a blast, with employees vying for the exclusive bragging rights of being the 2026 cornhole or kickball champs, and everyone trying their hands at archery. It was a day filled with friendly competition, good food and celebration of the people who work tirelessly to serve the Charlotte community every day.

Honoring Strength and Sacrifice
Friday, May 15

Police Week concluded with a tribute to the officers who laid down their lives in service to our community. Standing with their families and partner agencies, we reflected on the profound impact of their service and honored their strength, courage and sacrifice.

These heroes stepped forward when others stepped back. Their dedication to protecting our community will forever echo through the lives they touched. We honor their memory, uphold their legacy and remain committed to carrying forward the values they embodied.
