Make a difference in one of the most desirable and dynamic communities in the nation. Join the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

CMPD has overhauled its recruitment process to make it easier and faster to become a police officer. While our standards are high and the selection process is rigorous, we are committed to helping you do your best.

Here’s how:

1. Fewer steps

We have consolidated the application from 13 steps down to six. Instead of taking up to eight months, the process can take as few as eight weeks depending upon when you are ready to enter the Police Academy.

2. Online testing

If you do not live in Charlotte or Mecklenburg County, you can complete the standardized testing portion of the test online.

3. “One-day” testing

For tests that must be completed in-person (Nelson Denny Reading Assessment and JRPAT), we now offer them on the same day for your convenience.

4. Help with paperwork

The documentation needed to apply to become an officer is extensive. We have provided a complete list with explanations and helpful links in our “Keep Your Application Moving” blog post.

5. Help prepping for the JRPAT

Hard to pronounce and even harder to pass is the Job Related Physical Ability Test, or JRPAT. In addition to hosting workout sessions at the Police Academy twice a month, we have helpful blogs on “3 Ways to Get Ready to Crush the JRPAT Fitness Test” and this online instructional video.

6. Study support

We offer educational support to assist trainees with the academic portion of the Academy.
